Dr. Muhammed Tabiu, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who is Chairman of Green Horizon’s Board of Directors, is a Law Professor at Faculty of Law Bayero University Kano. His areas of academic interest include Human Rights law, Islamic law, reform of the justice system, and alternative disputes resolution.
For over twenty years he has held advisory and leadership positions in the implementation of a variety of justice and security sector reform initiatives supported by Nigeria’s development partners such as the DFID, EU, IOM and USIP, on issues relating to justice and security sector reform, application of Islamic law in the context of modern society, peacebuilding in conflict-affected areas, preventing and countering violent extremism, capacity building in Islamic and Humanitarian law, and transitional justice.
Lately, he led as National Team Leader in the successful implementation of the 5-year Managing Conflict in North-East Nigeria Programme, funded by the European Union and managed by the British Council. He is Co-Chairman of the Federal Justice Sector Reform Coordination Committee, in the Federal Ministry of Justice, and a member of the Advisory Committee of Experts of TAJ Bank. He was 2013 Kraemer Middle-East Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence, Williams and Mary University, Williamsburg, USA. Some of the other positions he held in the past include Head of Department of Islamic Law and Dean of the Faculty of Law at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto; Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Jigawa State; Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria (NHRC); and Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin.
